Online gambling has made and is continuing to make its way through Canada.  British Colombia was the first Canadian province to launch an online gambling site to compliment their lottery.  The site offered casino and other gambling games.  Even though it experienced technical and security issues within hours of its opening, it was met with much popularity.  Other provinces have seen this and are well on the way to launching their own online gambling sites.  All of this gambling news has caught the attention of groups across the country.  Some flat out oppose it on moral grounds.  However, there are some groups that see the inevitability of online gambling in Canada, are a content to educate citizens, especially the youth, about the ups and downs of the activity.

In Ontario, where online gambling is almost around the corner, a YMCA youth group is educating the province’s youth about online gaming, online gambling, gambling in general.  The approach is not to advocate that gambling is bad but to educate the youth about gambling.  “I’m not going to say it’s bad and I’m not going to say it’s really good, but I am going to teach you to gamble safely,” said an outreach worker for St. Catherine’s YMCA, Renee Grenier.  Mr. Grenier starts by asking the kids in his group to write down on a piece of paper something that is very valuable to them.  They then use the papers a gambling chips in an all or nothing competition.  Hopefully, this teaches the youth how easy it could be to loose something a value.

The Healthy Kids Centre wants to educate the Canadian youth on the difference between online gaming and online gambling.  Most kids pick up on how to learn how to win at video games.  They learn that the more they try, the more they learn skills, and the more they win.  Kim Charteris, wants kids to know that slot machines, and other online casino games of chance are not this way.  Both programs aren’t trying to advocate that online gambling is bad.  They want to educate the youth on how to make smart decisions.
