According to a report in the Guardian, “For the winning punters chancing their luck at Hawaiian Gardens’ charity bingo hall in the heart of one of California’s poorest towns, the big prize is $500. The losers walk away with little more than an assurance that their dollars are destined for a good cause.”

By using bingo gambling, a new door is opened to help charities of people both near and far. With this particular game the money that is used to gamble with is being used to help fund Jewish settlements on Palestinian land in eastern Jerusalem. This is a sensitive subject as this section of land where the settlements are is very unstable and the help of these bingo dollars will assist in creating more stability.

The bingo gambling consists usually of Latino residents of Hawaiian Gardens which lies just outside of Los Angeles. most sensitive areas of occupied East Jerusalem “…Over the past 20 years, the bingo hall has funnelled tens of millions of dollars in to what its opponents — including rabbis serving the Hawaiian Gardens area — describe as an ideologically-driven strategy to grab land for Israel, as well as contributing to influential American groups and thinktanks backing Israel’s more hawkish governments,” said the report.

Although the president is in support of casinos and gambling for charities and to better local communities, right now it is seen as preventing an opportunity for creating peace. The American government is seeing this opportunity as an obstacle or interference in creating strong relations with eastern Jerusalem.

“But the bingo operation, owned by an American Jewish doctor and millionaire, Irving Moskowitz, has taken on added significance in recent weeks as President Barack Obama has laid down a marker to Israel in demanding an end to settlement construction, which the White House regards as a major obstacle to peace.”

Las Vegas Nevada has seen many difficult times through this economic depression. A large portion of Nevada’s income comes from a land-based casinos and gambling that takes place there. Fontainebleau Las Vegas is a prime example of how the economy has impacted the casinos and the gambling industry.

In the past year Fontainebleau has seen many downfalls including the halting of construction leading towards an even bigger pitfall. The casino and hotel resort was predicted at $2.9 billion and has now been halted on the future construction that was supposed to be completed by 2010.

The Hotel and Casino resort company has now canceled meetings and conventions that were supposed be scheduled during those times, clearly stating that the hotel and casino resort will not be ready for opening in 2010.

Last month the company had filed for bankruptcy and had gone to court to release employees of their contracts. According to a statement released by the courts , “”In the business judgment of the debtors, the employment contracts do not provide a benefit to the debtors or their estates, and the employment contracts may therefore be rejected.”

Now the hotel and casino company has canceled all the events that were scheduled for January 1 through June 29. Many of the meetings and conventions that would be held there consisted of large numbers of people would’ve assisted in the gaining of revenue for the company.

The hopes of the Fontainebleau company was to open the hotel and casino resort in its prime location near the Las Vegas convention Center which will now most likely take on the extra business lost from the Fontainebleau Hotel Casino resort.

Fontainebleau will still maintain its meetings are held after June 2010 and was quoted in a statement as saying, “”We fully expect Fontainebleau Las Vegas to be completed so that it can accommodate meetings and conventions. The timing of that opening will depend in large part on the timing of renewed financing.”

M Casino Suffers its First Summer Part II

The M. Casino has offered other promotions such as slot tournaments, have drawn in gamblers who are ready to throw down their money in competition. The gamblers invested their money and their time at the land-based casinos which helps keep the companies in business.

In an attempt to create better loss prevention services, the casinos have now implemented multiple decks of cards for blackjack. These games are now known as shoe games and are more difficult for card counters.

Another move that the casino made was to remove the full pay and nearly full pay video poker machines from the casino floor. These machines offer great odds for gamblers to beat the house. In fact, traditionally gamblers could sit down at the video poker game and win or lose thousands of dollars in just one sitting. Marnell claims that he did not remove the games due to their volatile nature and high-stakes winnings. He goes on to say that the blackjack and craps tables which are played by most customers will completely offset even a multimillion dollar win at another game. Marnell’s response for removing the games was, “We are in business to have an edge and these games are nearly break-even.”

Marnell has taken a different approach to the customer service in his casinos. Recently discovered, the casino spent a great deal of time and money researching to find out what the customers desire in a luxury casino. Beyond finding the answers to these questions, the M. Casino resort has put into play the requests of the consumers.

Such examples include soda machines which are self-serving and free to the gamblers. This allows gamblers to grab their software when desired and takes the time away from the servers who can then put their focus on a higher-priced alcohol service.

Through these methods the casino will actually lose money since the M. Casino employs as many servers as other casinos of that size yet will no longer be taking soda orders.

Marnell is expecting to bounce back from this terrible summer as he states, “We’ve had an enormous number of people come down from the Strip to play who are now starting to come back.”

M Casino Suffers its First Summer Part I

After an astounding opening at the M. Hotel and Casino resort in Las Vegas, the wearisome upon me is now starting to take its toll on the company. The resort offered many perks to new visitors such as happy hours, competitive games in promotional and bonus offers, and even a self-serve wine cellar and television studio. Now in the heat of the summer the hotel and casino resort is taking a beating.

The owner of the casino as well as the namesake, Anthony Marnell II speaking up about the hardships of the economy and the summer that won’t ever end. According to Marnell, “This summer has been the most brutal I’ve ever seen in this business. August is going to be one of those months where you want to walk outside, dig a hole, get in and wake up on Labor Day.”

Although there were many unexpected changes that led to the decline of the economy, Marnell hit many of their projected marks throughout the year and has made a strong showing in the Las Vegas area. The M. Hotel is not the only Casino resort to suffer these trying times. It just happens to be one of the newer resorts.

Now that the newness of the M. Casino resort is starting to wear off the true testament of staying power for the hotel and casino will be the infrastructure that was created before the walls were even built.

Like with many other casinos, the M. resort will offer many promotions and bonuses to players in order to keep gambling a top priority. Unfortunately for the M. Casino June promotion that offered free comp points ended up not panning out. The promotion was to offer free comp points for simply calling the casino and arriving the following day. Many gamblers push the limits and try to take an image of receiving points without spending the money on gambling.

Changing the Law on Gambling Debts Part III

Author: Chris  //  Category: Online Casino News

Thomas Pitaro and Robert Langford are two advocates were fought hard for years concerning the specific issue of marker as a loan. Currently the law states that they can be prosecuted as a bad check however the discrepancy is whether or not it was a loan to begin with.

“When someone gives you money, and you pay it back later, it’s a loan,” Pitaro said. Langford stated, “Casinos call it credit until it’s not paid back. Then it becomes a check, and they turn to the district attorney’s office, which has become a collection agency with a badge and a gun.”

Concerning the Watanabe case and his casino debt, Chief Deputy District Attorney Bernie Zadrowski could not be reached for comment. Zadrowski runs the bad check unit and has spent years fighting for the law in support of it. Harrah’s entertainment also was not available for comment as it is their policy did not comment on legal matters involving the hotel and casino company.

According to the filing Harrah’s entertainment casino and hotel resort is owed a large debt by Watanabe and there are papers stating such. Harrahs also stated in its filing that Watanabe decides gambling at the casinos, had his own personal security officer provided by Harrah’s while he gambled and also provided him with a private roulette table. This information appears to be documented in e-mails to Harrah’s.

Watanabe, clearly big into gambling had lost nearly $112 million at the Harrah’s casinos in 2007. All but $14.7 million currently being questioned has been paid back according to Chesnoff.

On Thursday, Chesnoff reiterated those allegations, saying in his court papers that Watanabe “could not have possibly had the capacity to validly enter into the marker transactions, nor could he have formed the required present intent to defraud at the time when the markers were signed.”

According to Chesnoff, the district attorney put out a handbook detailing the bad check scenario wherein it states that the debt cannot be considered a bad check that can be prosecuted if the debt was predated, post dated or, “where an agreement was made to hold the check for later payment.”

In this specific scenario Watanabe may have found himself a loophole in the law that might allow him to slip away without being prosecuted. According to Steve Johnson, a professor at UNLV’s Boyd School of Law, “This is an argument that can be advanced reasonably in court,” he said. “The case against Watanabe is not a slam dunk.”

One of the concerns, especially for casinos in the future would that if Chesnoff wins the case and Watanabe is no longer being prosecuted, many gamblers with large debts will attempt to claim that they had oral agreement with the casinos that allow them to pay their markers at another time. Watanabe had a firm deal allegedly through a written agreement with the casino which could prove very helpful in this situation. As far as casinos are concerned, Johnson stated, “Just the mere making of this argument will make the casinos extremely reluctant to enter into such arrangements in the future.”

Many criminal defense lawyers are waiting for the outcome of this particular case it will change the way casinos handle their debts as well as how debtors will be prosecuted in the future. For those criminal defense lawyers who involve themselves in bad check cases, there may be a new defense that surfaces from this particular case.

Another aspect of the case is that many criminal defense lawyers have been fighting the bad check law for years, stating that by implement in a gambling marker you are receiving gambling rights as a credit therefore not obligated to pay the debt back immediately. Essentially the whole purpose of marker is a good-faith gesture stating that the money will be repaid however it is not accessible at the moment.

Currently there is a law in place that the legislature passed to allow proper authorities to go after unpaid gambling markers. These gambling markers would serve as unpaid or bad checks would be prosecuted as such in the court system.

Recently someone has challenged the law as Terrence K. Watanabe continues to fight his $14.7 million gambling debt that he had accumulated in 2006 and 2007.. Watanabe, a highrolling gambler from Nebraska gather his debts at both Caesars Palace and the Rio and is recently in court trying to decline paying his $14.7 million debt. Watanabe is also a wealthy wholesale novelty company owner who plans on using his money to the best of his ability in order to fight the system. In the event that he succeeds with this trial, this could overturn the law currently in place and change the way gambling debts are handled in the future.

David Chesnoff, attorney for Watanabe has filed for dismissal of the criminal charges at the District Court level last Thursday. According to Chesnoff’s filing, the $14.7 million debt cumulated at two of Harrah’s entertainment casinos were not included in the bag check statute.

The filing states that the gambling debt was allowed to 60 days before collection per an agreement made between Watanabe and Harrah’s Entertainment. In the event that this passes in the court the markers will not be considered as bad checks, but loans which therefore could not be prosecuted. “Such ‘checks’ are not negotiable instruments, and their nonpayment cannot be criminalized without violating the U.S. Constitution,” Chesnoff wrote.

Watanabe is fighting to separate himself from the lumps of gamblers who owe large debts to the casinos through claiming that the debt he owes is merely a loan and should not proceed as a bad check. This “unique” agreement “distinguishes Watanabe from virtually every other gambler in Las Vegas,” said Chesnoff.

Poker Champs Challenge Gambling

Three poker champs have been vocal about the process of legalizing casino poker both online and in land based casinos. Greg Raymer, Chris Ferguson and Andy Bloch recently flew to Washington DC ni order to schedule talks with the congressman about showing support for the legalization of poker in the United States. This meeting was set up through the connections with the Poker Players Alliance.

Greg Raymer stated, “I’m a Libertarian in terms of my general philosophy. I don’t think the government should ever tell me what to do with my own time and money. If you’re committing a crime against me, that’s where the government is supposed to stop you, but if you’re going to be at your own home doing something by yourself, the government shouldn’t have anything to say no matter what you’re doing.” Raymer is the 2004 World Series of Poker Champion, therefore clearly in favor of casino based gambling.

Full Tilt Poker, one of the more popular onine gambling casinos in the United States sent representative Andy Bloch to speak. “It’s going to be a busy couple of weeks for me. Hopefully I’ll make it to the WSOP Main Event final table. If not, I’m flying to London for a poker event and then on the way back, I’m stopping in Washington, DC for four days. The PPA did a fly-in last year and it was a great success. I think we’re going to bring in more people and be able to talk to more Congressmen this year,” said Bloch.

Chris Ferguson also from Full Tilt stated, “There has really been an attack on poker, particularly on online poker, during the last few years. We really think it’s unjustified. We think poker is a wonderful game and everyone should have the right to play it. We have casinos all over the United States where you can play poker. Why can’t you play online? What we’re doing is very good for poker and it’s going to bring the game to thousands of people all over the world.”
