In today’s world technology plays an important role in everything from day-to-day work related activities at crime scene investigation and more. Since the introduction of the World Wide Web, online users have continually rediscovered new ways of outputting information.

Recently in New Jersey a release went out according to The Press of Atlantic City: “A shift manager at the Trump Taj Mahal was shot to death Wednesday afternoon, and a suspect has been arrested, officials said.”

“Ray Kot, of Egg Harbor Township, was shot at about 3:30 p.m. inside a small room near the Casino Control Commission booth on the casino floor, State Police spokesman Sgt. Julian Castellanos said.”

“Mark McGee, 57, of Norristown, Pa., was charged with murder and weapons charges this morning. He was being held in the Atlantic County Justice Facility on $1 million cash bail.”

“McGee — a regular customer at the casino — and Kot knew each other, Castellanos said. The attack was apparently planned.”

The police were able to discover that the killing at the casino is planned as the murderer used popular technology and announced his plan openly.

“‘He put it on his Twitter last night,” Castellanos said.

“Twitter is a social messaging service that allows people to update what they’re doing in short messages called tweets. State Police would not comment on what McGee posted or when…”

In creating a tweet, McGee publicly threatened Ray Kot therefore showing his killing was premeditated and giving police online documentation that can be used against him in court.

This is not the first incident for social networking services have come in to play with crimes. Twitter, MySpace, Facebook and even craigslist has been utilized for online spreading of information. Recently a killer had been popularized as “the craigslist killer.” Unfortunately for casinos, bad press such as this gives land-based casinos a poor reputation in the eye of the public.
