According to a report in the Daily Mail, 42 elderly women were arrested for participating in gambling in Cyprus. The rest came as a result of complaints from neighbors stating that the house next door was being used as a local gambling den for elderly people. The noise and the attention that the House received was enough to have the police called and nearly 42 elderly women arrested. Gambling by law is illegal and therefore please felt it was their duty to shut down the operation.
The high stakes that were involved in the gambling den netted a whopping €100, or the equivalent of $150 United States. Although these women will only face misdemeanor charges, the neighbors and the police felt that they had to follow up on the calls.
Of the gambling players, they range between the age of 75 and 85 and had been participating in gambling and poker and gin Rummy. The oldest of these pack of events was 95 years old with the youngest being only 50. Clearly these ladies were not as much of a threat as they were a nuisance to their neighbors for protesting illegal gambling activity in their home.
Now they all have been charged with gambling and released with a court date still to be determined. Of the confiscated items that the police took the acquired 830 playing cards in 536 poker chips. This shows that in the difficult times, you cannot keep people from playing cards and gambling, however even if the stakes are low he can still be arrested and charged with the illegal activity.
The ironic thing is these ladies could not gamble for money however they are allowed to participate in state run gambling events such as the lottery or horseracing or even football. Since these are first-time offenders, it is likely that they will only face small fines for participating in illegal activity then be released.
