Ireland continues to struggle in pushing forward with land-based casinos. Their most recent venture received a no go from AN TAISCE recently stating that it was an inappropriate venture. The initial plan of creating this casino was to make a green casino that would be groundbreaking and beneficial to the environment. By creating such a venue it would allow the gambling public an opportunity for fun and entertainment as well as creating thousands of jobs that are much needed in the area. According to Michael Lowry, he felt that An Taisce did not really put forth their full effort in examining the project.
The plans of the Tipperary Casino gambling project would include a €460 million project known as The Tipperary Venue. The project has been inspired by one of the major developers, Richard Quirke who currently is in charge of Dr. Quirkey’s Good Time Emporium.
The plan for the project would be to set the casino on 800 acres of which 6000 m² would be the casino floor. The rest of the project would embellish on these initial plans by creating a full-scale replica of the White House, occupancy for 500 bedrooms in a five-star hotel as well as many other amenities such as a theater which seeks 15,000 people. To add to the gambling entertainment they would be a race course, a greyhound track, a golf course and parking for up to 8000 cars. The final touches would be put on by placing a heliport is a major flight transaction for the complex.
The hopes and the goals of this company is to create complex that would bring in a high roller type of clientele to the resort, therefore bringing in more money into the economy in Tipperary. Ian Lumley, the heritage officer has help with this type of project is inappropriate and he also feels that the long journey that would result in a short trips would not be beneficial to the casino project, therefore making it a failure. In using the racecourse as one of their major draws to bring gambling to the resort, Lumley stated that if an indoor racecourse should be functioning currently, it should happen at a pre-existing racecourse.
