About Parlay Betting

Parlay betting is an important part of sports betting. A straight-up bet consists of an over or under wager, an ATS (against the spread) bet or a moneyline wager. Parlay wagering can be combinations of all three betting options. A parlay is a single bet that links together multiple individual wagers, often called an accumulator, and is dependent on all of those wagers winning together. Since a parlay is difficult to hit, the bet is often considered a gimmick by serious bettors.

A two-team parlay generally pays 13/5, which would result in $364 on a $100 wager. A three-team parlay usually pays 6/1, a four team pays 10/1 and so on with the payouts getting higher as more teams and totals are selected. This is because it is more unlikely that all of your wagers will win and allow you to win the parlay. All of the wagers must win or push (tie) to win the parlay. If any of the selections lose, the parlay loses. If one or more wagers result in a tie, the parlay reverts to the next lowest number. So if you have a four-team parlay and have three winners and a tie, you get paid out as a three-team parlay. If you have a two-team parlay with one team winning and one tie, the parlay becomes a straight bet.

The odds on a moneyline parlay are calculated by multiplying the prices of the selections together with the stake. The favorites are denoted by a –(minus) sign. The underdogs are denoted by a +(plus) sign. For example, let’s say you bet a $10 parlay on two selections, one with odds of -110 and one with odds of 150. To calculate your parlay, you must first convert the odds into decimal format.

For the favorite…

100/110 = .909 and add 1 (to include the stake) = 1.909

For the underdog…

150/100 = 1.5 and add 1 (to include the stake) = 2.5

To find your return, multiple the odds together with the stake…

1.909 x 2.5 x $10 =$47.73
